Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. She was only a young toddler when her father who was an carnival barker, died. The mother of the family had to work in jobs like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth lived in a slum Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She was a student there. She only attended the school for two years, before going on to pursue an acting career. This was not an easy path to follow. Even though she got an opportunity as a hat check girl in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that came her way. After working as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she resigned and went back to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as a steady actor. Earned money doing shifts during the day, as an usherette. In addition, she was a drama student and later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
